Bara brith literally means Speckled bread - and was traditionally
the last bit of dough from the weekly bake, with a few currants added!
Nowadays, there are many recipes, and ours is more of a 'cake' mix rather than a bread, but can be sliced and served with butter and a cup of tea.
Our bread is supplied by 2 local bakeries, being Popty Bettws and organic sour bread from Popty Mair. (popty means bakehouse, and is pronounced 'poptee'), are local independent bakeries making 'proper bread'!! Baked fresh daily from scratch, and using skills passed down the family lines.
Scrumptious homebaked cakes are a speciality here at Llwynhelyg - choose from our award winning, sticky ginger cake, victoria sponges through to our prize winning flapjacks - which are now available on-line, so you can treat yourself, or send a surprise treat to friends and family!
We also bake traditional Welsh teatime treats, such as bara brith, teisen lap and welshcakes. Baked on site and by local farmers' wives who know how to make a good cake!
For pudding, we offer a selection of homemade desserts - cheesecakes, tiramisu and sticky toffee puddings with a selection of fresh desserts from Blas ar Fwyd and homemade fruit pies. Locally made luxury Christmas puddings are available from October. Again, all are made in small batches to give that homemade taste.
Llwynhelyg Farm Shop Flapjacks are made with only the best ingredients - Welsh butter, oats, sugar and golden syrup. Baked in the farmhouse kitchen to a secret recipe developed by Jenny and now available in "original" and "cranberry & apricot" flavours.
Winner of the silver award in the Wales True Taste Awards 2007, and commended in previous years, The flapjacks are available from the shop, but by popular request we can now send them by post throughout the UK.
This is a brilliant way to surprise your friends and family, or to say "Thankyou", "Happy Birthday", or simply to treat yourself to a little taste of Wales!
